Obituary

Steven Monteiro, born December 17, 1947, passed away on December 8, 2025, at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy as wild, wondrous, and enduring as life itself. His story was a tapestry of adventure—filled with moments so unbelievable they sounded like legend. Steven lived without fear, embracing the unknown and turning ordinary days into epic tales.

A man of deep resilience, he weathered every season of life with strength. In his final years, he faced Alzheimer's—a cruel wind that tried to strip away his memories—but his roots ran deep. Even as the fog rolled in, his spirit remained vibrant and unmistakably him. Those who knew him will remember his laughter, his charm, and the way he made life feel bigger and more alive.

His story began in Brazil, where the foundation for his "live in the moment" spirit was first laid, and where he learned to ride a horse and spent cherished days on the family farm. Life then carried him to Chicago for his junior high and high school years, during which he split his time between the States and his beloved Mar Grande. This chapter brought tales of wild high‑school antics, vibrant memories of Carnival, and remarkable athletic feats. After graduation, he served in Vietnam as an Army Ranger—an experience that left an indelible mark, one he rarely spoke of until his later years.

Steven eventually settled in Jupiter, FL, where he spent many years working in construction throughout Palm Beach County, taking great pride in his craft and the people he worked alongside. Fitness was a constant in his life. Early mornings at the gym marked his routine, and in his younger years he competed in marathons and triathlons. His discipline and determination became a lasting example for his children and for everyone around him.

He always found joy in sports. Steven coached for many years for the Jupiter Sting Youth Soccer Program and followed soccer like a religion. But his most favorite thing was cheering for his beloved Chicago Bears. Countless weekends were spent hoping this would be the year, a tradition that brought him equal parts excitement and frustration.

Above all else, Steven loved his family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Nelson; his stepfather, Clyde Nelson; and his father, Jorge Monteiro. He is survived by his brother, Jorge Monteiro; his children, Cory Monteiro (Alecia), Erin Ohlsen (Jason), and Evan Monteiro (Meghan); and his six grandchildren, who were the light of his life and the carriers of his stories, spirit, and love.

Steven will be remembered for his strength, his storytelling, and the love he poured into every relationship. His life reminds us that beauty lies in resilience—and that even as the sun sets, his light endures in the memories of all who knew him.

A celebration of his extraordinary life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association or MorseLife Hospice & Palliative Care.
